Getting your first tattoo—or even your tenth—can bring up questions about pain levels. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, certain body parts are generally more sensitive than others. Let’s break down what you can expect when getting tattooed in different locations.
Pain during tattooing varies significantly based on several factors:
The outer bicep, calves, and thighs are typically considered less painful areas to get tattooed. These spots have more muscle and fat cushioning, fewer nerve endings, and thicker skin. Many first-time clients choose these locations for their debut tattoos, and for good reason.
The forearms, ankles, and outer shoulders fall into the moderate pain category. While not the most comfortable experience, most clients find these areas quite manageable. The sensation is often described as more of a constant annoying scratch rather than sharp pain.
Ribs, hands, feet, and any areas with thin skin or directly over bone tend to be more intense. These spots often require more breaks during the session and might not be ideal for first-timers. However, don’t let this discourage you—many of our clients say the end result was worth the temporary discomfort.
Remember, everyone’s experience is unique. Our experienced artists know how to work with different pain tolerances and will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout your session.
